Breast Revision Surgery
This is sometimes thought of as correcting a previous mistake, but in truth some individuals have suboptimal results due to poor wound healing, implant malposition, or the effects of time. Patients in Minnetonka, Edina, and Burnsville have the expertise of Dr Matthew Camp at their disposal to address these issues.
Improvements from Revision Breast Surgery
It is reasonable to have doubts that another surgery will correct your problems after having a previous negative experience. Dr Camp has many years of experience with this and is well equipped to bring you to a happy outcome. Women choose revision surgery for a variety of reasons, which often include one or more of the following:
- Repositioning implants that have dropped or moved and don’t look natural
- Exchanging breast implants for a different size or type (such as replacing saline implants with silicone)
- Correcting a complication (such as capsular contracture)
- Repositioning nipples
- Correcting scars
- Removing breast implants without replacing them
About Revision Surgery
Every revision surgery is different depending on your specific issues. Dr Matthew Camp will explain his plan and rationale in detail prior to the procedure. Some minor procedures can be performed in the clinic under local anesthesia, but most are performed in the operating room with the patient asleep under the care of a board certified anesthesiologist. These procedures often take 1-3 hours to complete. You will go home after an hour of recovery and will require a driver to bring you home.
What to Expect During Recovery
The amount of discomfort and swelling is similar to what you experienced after your initial surgical procedure. The schedule for resumption of normal activities and the risk profile is similar to other breast enhancement procedures, with variations for each patient’s situation.
Will the things I don’t like about my first surgery change without more surgery?
Complications and unsatisfactory results can occur, despite the best efforts of your other plastic surgeon. Some issues resolve without revision surgery. Occasionally the effects do not improve and may need additional surgery to improve the final appearance of your breasts.
If I am unhappy with my implants and just want them removed, how will my breasts look?
While patient experiences vary, appearance of the breasts may not be desirable or pleasing if implants are removed and not replaced. The result is a very deflated, flattened look, and the scar tissue is unpredictable, sometimes resulting in inverted nipples, and worse. It is possible to fold the breast tissue on to itself to create a cone shape, but there is no guarantee of success. If breast implants are absolutely not an option, we can elect to perform a two step process where the breast is corrected by removal of the implant and recreation of the breast mound, then fat grafting the result at a later date.
